Should Harry Potter have ended up with Hermione?

In the film yes.

In the book no.

In fact the whole problem is that in the films, they totally changed the characters of Ron, Ginny and Hermione (watered down vision of Hermione, massacre for Ron and Ginny)

In the books, Hermione is a person who takes things to heart. Very close to my heart. Too much to heart. She is incapable of taking anything lightly, is quite pretentious, and sometimes even mean. She sometimes goes way out of line, like when she disfigured Marietta Edgecombe for life. In short, although she is courageous, creative, fair and talented, she too often tends to see a breeze as a storm.

It’s no coincidence that Malfoy is terrified in Harry Potter 3, the Hermione of the books has probably considered the possibility of popping his head like a champagne cork.

Next door we have Harry. Harry who is assailed by dark thoughts. Probably suffered a lot of trauma (like living for 17 years with a piece of a dark mage’s soul). He’s quite cynical, and one of his greatest pleasures is handing out barbs. He takes more than he gives.

Besides, just look at how quickly he fired Cho, because she was crying. Which made Harry look like a real bastard, but you have to put yourself in his place: he has the life of a m…, his parents are dead, he lived in a closet, a dark wizard wants his skin, he has the Cédric’s death on his conscience… and the only thing Cho can bring him is tears over Cédric’s death (guilt ++).

We therefore mix this Harry who is a great wizard, but also a sower of chaos with dark ideas and traumas… with a Hermione who considers the slightest problematic event as a tragedy and takes everything seriously.

Do you really think they would make a good couple? Personally, I see a more depressive climate than the poor neighborhoods of Roubaix.

Just because Harry and Hermione are both gifted doesn’t mean they have to end up together. The mix of their personalities would probably end in a double suicide.

Now let’s go to Ron:

Ron, in the book, is the oxygen which holds the 2 hydrogen atoms of the trio, the positive which attracts and attaches the two negatives.

Ron has the perfect personality to complement Hermione, her drama, her anxieties and her social errors. He takes things with optimism and lightness, is full of humor, and is there to remind us that a breeze… is just a breeze. He is also courageous, empathetic, loyal to his friends. In short, relationally speaking it is a real pillar.

Ron Weasley in the books

What did they do with it in the movies? A funny sidekick. Worse in fact because the majority of his jokes, very funny in the book, were removed to be replaced by ridicule. We no longer laugh with him, we laugh at him. And not often.

Ron Weasley in the films.

The treatment was less harsh for Ginny, but her personality was still put through the wash. Ginny is the perfect companion for Harry because she gives more than she takes. And it represents a fairly durable crutch.

For a character with high needs like Harry, a support like Ginny is much more interesting than a genius, but candy-breaking, Hermione.

So no, Harry shouldn’t have ended up with Hermione, and vice versa.

In fact, if Harry had been bisexual and Ginny had not been available, he would have most likely ended up with Ron. Or Neville, who is also an example of a positive character ending up with a more negative character (although in the case of Neville – Luna, they are less polarized than the other two couples).
