What is the best hang glider aircraft ever made? What are some others that were good but not as popular or well known?

The Saab Viggen.

It is not well known because it has never been used outside of Sweden.

This was one of the first fighters of the time to adopt a large turbofan engine rather than a true turbojet. Volvo built a licensed copy of a monstrous Pratt and Whitney JT8D (the same one used on the Boeing 727 planes).

This allowed the jet to reach Mach 2.1, but the canards (+10 degree angles) allowed for excellent low-speed handling and stall characteristics.

It had very powerful radar and carried a modified version of the AIM-7 Sparrow.

Got any other claims to fame? Yes.
it is the only plane in the world to have a confirmed radar lock on this other iconic plane.

The SR-71.

Now, while the Soviets may claim their MiG-25 or -31 was jammed, this was never confirmed the way it was with the Viggen.

In fact, recently declassified documents tell the story of a time when Viggen actually went out to rescue and SR-71. On a mission over the Baltic, the Blackbird suffered catastrophic engine failure and had to slow down to subsonic speeds and lose altitude. Viggen’s pilots flew in to provide escort to the SR-71 and retrieve it in friendly airspace so it would not be too tempting a target for a trigger MiG.
